What to expect from the BF2 maps remade in BF3
With the announcement of the Back at Karkand DLC for Battlefield 3, many wondered what maps would be included in the package. We now know that the maps are Strike at Karkand, Gulf of Oman, Sharqi Peninsula and Wake Island. These four maps will be remade for Battlefield 3 with the new Frostbite 2.0 engine, and in this article, we’re giving a little glimpse back at those maps and what their history was in Battlefield 2, and what to expect in BF3.
Gulf of Oman
Gulf of Oman will retain much of the same visual style as the Battlefield 2 version, and a very similar desert setting, with both urban areas and more wide-open spaces for tank and jet combat.
Gulf of Oman was the very first map BF2 fans got to play — it was the only map in the BF2 demo, released in June 2005, in fact, there are still some BF2 demo servers running out there, with a few hundred players still playing Gulf of Oman.
The map offered a variety between urban combat, tank warfare, and air warfare as well. It was one of the few maps to include almost all vehicles: tanks, jets, attack helicopters, transport helicopters and APCs, which made Gulf of Oman prone to some of the most varied gameplay in Battlefield 2. The battles were also spread out quite a lot, especially on 64 player maps, where there are 7 capturable flags.
BF3 expectation: The map might be physically smaller due to engine constrains, but we expect mostly the same layout, with the same amount of vehicles and flags.
Sharqi Peninsula
Sharqui Peninsula was a tight, urban map in Battlefield 2, and it looks to continue that style in Battlefield 3, set during the evening, which provided interesting and warm colors.
Sharqi Peninsula was one of the most dense BF2 maps, with almost all flags within short running distance. There were only two tanks on the map and one APC on the MEC side, which meant that most combat was infantry based. The map also featured varied elevation levels in close proximity, and it was one of the few maps where the USMC team was on the defensive side.
BF3 expectation: some of the larger buildings, like the TV Tower (the far most eastern flag), might not make the cut, or if they do, we don’t expect them to be fully destructible. Other than that, we see no reason why the elevation differences, which made the map quite dynamic, to not make it in the BF3 version.
Wake Island
Wake Island takes a big departure from the Battlefield 2 version. Instead of lush, tropical visuals, we get a more darker and gritty map which has been ravaged by war and combat.
Wake Island is the granddaddy of Battlefield maps — it was the first map to be played in Battlefield 1942, and was remade not only for Battlefield 2, but for 2142 as well. On top of that, it was one of the maps in Battlefield 1943. Wake Island is heavily based on air warfare, with both sides having a pair of jets and an attack chopper.
BF3 expectation: Since the map was already remade with the Frostbite engine for Battlefield 1943, we expect the BF3 version to be near identical to the BF2 version. Wake Island is a tried and tested map which has appeared in 4 Battlefield games, so we expect no changes in the layout.
Strike at Karkand
Strike at Karkand was a dusty, grim map in Battlefield 2 with low visibility and almost no colors besides khaki. The Battlefield 3 version looks a lot more colorful and lifelike, which will be welcomed in the remake of a classic.
Strike at Karkand was the most popular BF2 map by far, due to its intense urban combat. The vehicles were limited to one tank and APC per team, and its narrow streets limited the usefulness of the heavy vehicles, which put the focus on infantry combat even more. Karkand was also broken up into two parts across the bridge, each with with 4 flags, and some of the most intense combat was when the two teams each controlled a side.
BF3 expectation: Strike at Karkand is a classic, so DICE probably won’t mess with the layout too much. However, Karkand featured a lot of tall buildings, some 4-5 floors high. The buildings in the previous Frostbite engine game, Bad Company 2, had only 2 or 2.5 stories. While it doesn’t mean that Frostbite 2.0 is limited to that size, but since the buildings are fully destructible, it might make it difficult to include 4 or 5 story buildings in Karkand in BF3. We’ll have to wait and see.
