When Quorthon formed the band in 1983, his nickname was originally Black Spade. He soon changed it to Ace Shoot, then finally to Quorthon, a name...

Bathory were one of the pioneers of the first wave of both black metal and Viking metal.

Formed in 1983 by Quorthon, Jonas Åkerlund, and Frederick Melander, but didn't come up with the name of the band until the recording of Scandinavian Metal Attack.

Played their first gig on April 13th, 1992, alongside Enslaved, Algol, and Infinite Decay.

Emperor were known as one of the most infamous Norwegian black metal bands during the early and mid 1990s. Samoth was jailed 16 months for taking part in church burnings with Varg Vikernes (Burzum), along with other members of the Norwegian black metal scene. Drummer Faust was jailed for church burning and for the stabbing and murder of a homosexual man in 1992 (he was never suspected for it until 2 years later when he was arrested in 1994).

The group disbanded in 2001 because they felt they had lived up to everything they wanted to with Emperor. They have received "legendary" status, toured worldwide, have a large catalog of releases, and they didn't want to be known as another group that "never knows when to quit making music" as well as creative incompatibilities (Ihsahn was becoming more inspired by the progressive tendencies he would showcase in his solo work, whereas Samoth was exploring a technical death metal inspiration he would utilize in Zyklon.)

An Emperor guitar/bass tablature book titled "Scattered Ashes - A Decade of Emperial Wrath" was released by Candlelight Records in 2006. It features 13 Emperor classics transcripted by Ihsahn and comes with a free CD (the first disc of the compilation of same name released in 2003).

The band reunited in 2005 to play at Scream Magazine's anniversary festival and to headline the 2006 editions of Norway's Inferno Festival and Germany's Wacken Open Air. In an interview with UK Magazine Terrorizer, Ihsahn hinted at the possibility of another Emperor album, but stated that Emperor is now a side project.

In 2013, another reunion was announced, with original drummer Faust, to headline Bloodstock Festival in 2014, and the 25th anniversary of the Wacken Open Air festival in the same year. This reunion also marked the 20th anniversary of "In the Nightside Eclipse".

In 2016, another reunion was announced for 2017 in which the band will perform "Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk" album in its entirety to celebrate the LP's 20th anniversary. (...)

Dimmuborgir (note: not Dimmu Borgir, as the band's name) is a place in northern Iceland, where local legends purport that it is an entrance or gate to hell. Old Man's Child is the name taken from a term found in a Viking book by a former member, and the band ended up using it as they wanted a unique name to stand out. It was long believed to mean "son of Satan/the devil," but this is apparently not so.

The group first went by the name Requiem, which was originally a Metallica and Slayer cover band formed in 1989. By 1993, they had become a death metal band and released a very limited self-titled demo with original material. Later that year they changed their style to black metal and became Old Man's Child.

After the band changed their name to Old Man's Child, they had a slow start forming the group because founding members Galder and Jardar both served in the Norwegian army at the time.

Formed by ex-members of Amputation and Old Funeral.

Euronymous of Mayhem is credited for getting Abbath into black metal and as a result, Abbath getting Varg Vikernes (Burzum) into black metal as well. Despite these associations, Immortal's primary members have never been involved in the more controversial activities of some of their contemporaries in the second wave of black metal. Their lyrics have also never involved the religious or political ideologies often associated with the scene to any great extent, instead being concerned with darkness and evil in a fantasy setting.

Co-founder Demonaz stepped down from being the guitarist of band in 1997 due to severe tendinitis in his arms that prevented him from playing fast guitar. He has continued to write lyrics and has occasionally served as manager for Immortal since. In 2013, Demonaz had surgery to correct his tendonitis, giving him the ability to play the guitar again.

In 2003 Abbath, Demonaz, and Horgh decided to stop working with Immortal due to personal reasons. Abbath started playing in a Motörhead cover band called Bömbers, together with Tore Bratseth (Old Funeral, Desekrator) and Pez, and also started the more traditional metal band I.

Immortal reformed in June 2006 and later released one more album All Shall Fall but in March 2015 the band split-up once again due to disagreement between the members. Abbath went on to record a new album under his own name.

The band was reactivated again in August 2015, and features a lineup of Demonaz and Horgh. The justification for this was that because Abbath failed to secure the trademark to the band's name and was also pursuing his new solo project, Demonaz was free to use the Immortal moniker.

In 2018, the band released their first album without Abbath.

As of August 2020, Demonaz and Horgh are involved in a legal dispute over the rights to the band's name. While Demonaz intends to be the sole name proprietor as the only remaining founding member, Horgh considers the name property should be a joint ownership between Demonaz and him.

According to the band, "Blashyrkh" is a mystical place only known by its name; a demon and battle-filled realm of eternal darkness and winter.

Contrary to popular belief, Satyricon was never called Omnipotence. According to Exhurtum, he and Wargod started the band in 1990, playing death metal influenced by Cadaver, Carcass, and Napalm Death. Lemarchand joined shortly thereafter. At that time, they were called Eczema.

In 1991, they decided to start playing black metal, so the name was changed to Satyricon and then Satyr joined the band. After the first demo, Exhurtum was kicked out the band while Wargod left the music scene and became a UN soldier afterwards. Lemarchand was kicked out after the second demo.

Satyr was the owner of the now-defunct Moonfog Productions.

Signed to Napalm Records worldwide, Roadrunner Records in the UK, Indie Recordings in Norway and Nuclear Blast in North America.

In December 2004, live guitarists Steinar Gundersen and Obsidian Claw were arrested in Canada for allegedly drugging and raping a woman in their tour bus after a show in Toronto. The remainder of the tour with 3 Inches of Blood was canceled. The charges against the pair were later dropped.

Back in 1999, Satyr, Fenriz (Darkthrone), Philip Anselmo (Pantera), Killjoy (Necrophagia) and Maniac (Mayhem) started a "supergroup" called Eibon. They were supposed to record a full-length, but due to their heavy schedule, plans were changed. Maniac left the band and they released one track called "Mirror Soul Jesus" on the Moonfog Productions compilation Moonfog 2000 - A Different Perspective. They also recorded an unnamed song which can be downloaded from the old Moonfog Productions website.

Satyricon's video for the song "Mother North" is played in the movie Spun. They agreed to it on the condition that the director of the film, Jonas Åkerlund, directed their next music video for the song "Fuel for Hatred".

Jon Nödtveidt (aged 31) shot and killed himself on August 13th, 2006. Swedish police found him in his apartment inside a circle of lit candles. It is believed that he killed himself because he felt he had achieved all that he could/was meant to in this life. According to some who actually knew him, this was probably planned ever since he got out of jail.

The band first disbanded due to Jon Nödtveidt's accomplice to murder conviction. He was serving time in prison since 1997 until early 2004 and then reactivated the band.

The band's first song ever written was "Inhumanity Deformed", a Napalm Death-inspired grindcore piece, but soon they developed their own melancholic and atmospheric style of death metal.

Said to be one of the pioneers of the sub-genre funeral doom metal along with Thergothon.

Skepticism had a bassist on their 7" debut who quit right after its release. On their second release they had a bass player from another band. The bass on Stormcrowfleet was a session member from the band Lihtede.

Eero Pöyry initially joined as a second guitarist.

Taken from the Complete Tolkien Companion by J.E.A. Tyler:

"Gorgoroth 'Dreadful Horror' (The Sindarin or Grey-elven tongue) - A word in the Grey-elven tongue, used for two different locations, distinct in time and space.... the second instance is the name of the 'Haunted Plains' of Mordor; the great plateau which occupied the north-western area of that country, a desolate, arid land, pocked with craters and fuming pits and riven with many deep crevasses. In the centre of the plain rose the smouldering cone of the volcano Orodruin."

The band has never officially published their lyrics, neither through album booklets nor other sources, online or otherwise.

Various members of the band were involved in different crimes. Kjettar was convicted of church arson in the early 90's. In 2004, Gaahl went to court on charges of "performing torture lasting for several hours" on a 41 year old man which claimed to have been assaulted, kidnapped and beaten by him following a bar brawl; Gaahl stated that he acted in self defense after the victim "crossed the line" and attacked him. In the aftermath of the highly mediatized case he was sentenced to four months in jail and had to pay a $30,000 fine to the victim.

On January 4th, 2006, Infernus was taken to court on charges of kidnapping, participation in gang rape and illegal weapon possession. With exception of admitting some minor violations of Norwegian fire arm regulations he has declared himself not guilty. In May 2005, Infernus and a friend were sentenced to three years in prison for rape. Both of them appealed the verdict. Infernus won the appeal and was found not guilty in the rape case. He was however convicted of "gross negligent rape" (i.e. he should have known that the woman had been raped by his friend before he himself had sex with the woman - who had at this point surrendered mentally).

During October 2007, Gorgoroth members Gaahl and King ov Hell decided to kick founding member Infernus out of the band. A legal battle over the rights of the name and logo between Infernus and Gaahl / King then ensued. Gaahl and King carried on touring without Infernus for around 18 months after copyrighting the band's name and logo (before 'firing' him), while Infernus put together a new line-up.

Oslo City District Court delivered a verdict on March 10th 2009 on the main question in the Gorgoroth trademark case, which took place at the end of January 2009, deciding that King ov Hell's trademark registration #243365 of the band name was not valid and shall therefore be deleted.

The court states that King ov Hell and Gaahl excluded themselves from the band Gorgoroth when they tried to fire Infernus in October 2007. The court further states that Infernus cannot be excluded from Gorgoroth, unless he himself decides to quit. The remaining issues concerning financial matters and such are yet to be decided upon.

While many musicians have come and gone, Infernus has always stayed in the band, though the last two albums before the split were almost entirely composed by King. King has said that he "never really left" Gorgoroth despite his brief official absence between 2006 and 2007, which according to Infernus happened due to King's "difficulties combining playing in a clear-cut Satanic metal band as Gorgoroth with the fact that he is full-time employed as a primary school teacher."

The band participated in the Darkthrone tribute Darkthrone Holy Darkthrone, released by Moonfog Productions in 1998, covering the song "Slottet I Det Fjerne". Later, in 2001, Gorgoroth also participated in the Mayhem tribute Originators of the Northern Darkness, released by Avantgarde Music, covering the song "Life Eternal".

The online broadcast network vbs.tv made a documentary about Norwegian black metal, but they focused primarily on Gorgoroth and Gaahl.

Frank Watkins began using the stage name "Bøddel" in 2009. Bøddel is Norwegian for "Executioner," which was the band Obituary's original moniker.

Darkthrone started as a death metal band, but by the end of 1990 and the beginning of 1991, when they were rehearsing the material that would eventually become Goatlord, Nocturno Culto, Zephyrous, and Fenriz developed interest in black metal. Soon they decided to abort the Goatlord sessions because the material didn't reflect what they felt, and started to compose the songs that were to be found on A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Dag Nilsen was the only member who still wanted to play technical death metal, so he recorded the bass lines for A Blaze in the Northern Sky and then left the band.

The band's name was inspired by a Danish zine from around 1985/86 called Blackthorn, written by the guys from the Danish band DesExult, as well as by the lyrics of the Celtic Frost song "Jewel Throne" (I'm the king, sitting in the dark hiding from the shadows of the wind/.../ As I gaze from the Jewel Throne to the portal of infinity).

Darkthrone are known for the fact that there have only been very few live appearances for various reasons. The very last concert to date took place in 1996, being a one-off event as well.

According to the December 2007 issue of Decibel Magazine, the band's logo was designed by Tomas Lindberg of At the Gates. This was confirmed by Lindberg himself in a 2014 interview with the MetalSucks Podcast.

Compilation appearances:

- "Land of Frost" on No Slow Thrashification Vomit I (Thrashing Death Promotions, 1988).

A year later after they had released the debut EP Dark Funeral (which was re-released again with different cover art, title and bonus songs), they signed on with No Fashion Records. They continued to release albums on No Fashion until 2001, then later got signed by Regain Records.

Not to be confused with a Danish dungeon synth project also named Dark Funeral, which released a demo called In Thy Forest in 1993. The Swedish band Dark Funeral never released a demo.

Formed out of the ashes of Phobia. At the time, Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson were respectively 13 and 17 years old. Their first concert was in Haugesund on November 30th, 1991.

The name of the band was inspired by Demonaz of Immortal after the Immortal demo track "Enslaved in Rot".

After three consecutive albums with a stable line-up, Enslaved found themselves back to the founding duo of Bjørnson and Kjellson, in 2003. First, guitarist and co-composer Roy Kronheim left, following a short UK tour in March 2003. Then, drummer Dirge Rep completed his parts on the follow-up album, "Below the Lights", and left, reportedly as he was unhappy with all non-musical aspects of being in a band.

In 1991, when Satanel disbanded, Vikernes revived his solo project, changing the name to Burzum (which translates to "darkness" in J.R.R. Tolkien's Black Speech, which is spoken by orcs and other creatures of Mordor). Handling all instruments and vocals by himself, he recorded Burzum's first four full-length albums in a span of just over one year. In addition to all that, he joined Mayhem on bass, as well.

In the wake of the notoriety surrounding the church burnings, and finally the murder of Mayhem's leader Euronymous in 1993, Vikernes faced a trial and was sentenced to 21 years in prison (and 10 years additional confinement, a system that has since been changed). For a very short period of time, Vikernes was allowed to have a guitar in his cell. However, once he was no longer allowed to have a guitar in his cell, and proclaiming all rock and metal-based music to be culturally alien and non-Aryan in origin, he chose to continue Burzum in a keyboard-based, neoclassical ambient vein for the two albums that followed.

Vikernes chose to end Burzum in late 2000, disappointed that fans were still connecting Burzum with Satanism, despite his allegiance to paganism and right-wing politics.

According to Vikernes, because Euronymous was too incompetent to release Burzum albums on Deathlike Silence Productions, Vikernes decided to start his own label called Burznazg (which translates to "Dark Ring" in Tolkien's Dark Speech), that was later (in 1993) changed to Cymophane Records (Greek: "Wave to appear", the name of a gem that is shaped like an eye) and do everything himself.

In October 2003, Vikernes had a weekend leave from jail, and fled during that time - only to be caught back later the same day by the police. Rumors also began to circulate that a third ambient album was to be released, and that the plans were canceled after Vikernes' attempted escape. However, Vikernes denied these claims.

In March 2009, it was announced that Vikernes would be released from prison, on the condition that he would have to report to his parole officer for the period of a year. On May 24, 2009, he was officially released on probation.

Vikernes has repeatedly stated that he is not fond of using a specific font as to make it an official logo for Burzum, showing no interest whatsoever towards having an actual logo. The old writing is often considered as the logo, yet Vikernes did not intend it, but only took the font he thought to suit the best among all other font stickers he found in a store. He has also remarked in a number of interviews that he is not fond of Burzum being labeled as "black metal", in turn, he thinks "heavy metal" suits better. However, he refers to his music as "scaldic metal" or even "scaldic music".

In 2012 Vikernes opened a YouTube channel for his blog, Thulean Perspective where he uploaded a video featuring a new instrumental black metal track called "Back to the Shadows". In the description of the video, he stated that Burzum would cease producing metal for good.

Other exclusive tracks have been streamed through Thulean Perspective's YouTube Channel.

In 2019 the channel has been closed by YouTube for several violations of the site's standards such as promoting white supremacy, racism and discrimination toward various ethnical groups and communities.

In July 2013, Vikernes was arrested in France under the suspicion that he was planning a terrorist attack. French police decided to act when Vikernes' wife legally purchased four hunting rifles in a local shop.

Vikernes's first band was known as Uruk-Hai, formed around 1988-89. In mid-1990 Vikernes took a one-year break, which he spent playing in Old Funeral, and later in Satanel, which he formed with Abbath of Immortal.

As of June 2018, after three years officially of musical inactivity with Burzum, Varg Vikernes implied in a YouTube video posted on his channel "Thulean Perspective", that his long-time project was finally over.

In October of 2019, Varg tweeted that another album consisting of unreleased material is in the works.

Interesting facts:

Burzum has never played live.

AiwarikiaR, the former Ulver drummer, was intended to be the drummer of Burzum during the short period that Vikernes was considering to make live performances under the Burzum name. Fenriz from Darkthrone and Hellhammer from Mayhem, were also auditioned - the latter was in fact announced as the band's new drummer on flyers and in interviews in the interim between the self-titled album and the Aske EP.

At one point, before the murder of Euronymous, Vikernes was considering on signing to Earache Records to release his fourth album and this label did want to try having a black metal act on their line-up. Though, Earache hesitated to sign him because of his highly racist views (and also the fact that at that time, Earache were a death metal/grindcore label and were not known for black metal) despite the fact that Vikernes was also arrested the following year of this.

All albums from the self-titled to Hlidskjalf were jointly re-released in 2010 on Byelobog Productions and Candlelight Records as jewel case CD with slipcase.

Although Vikernes officially ended Burzum in 2018, in October 2019 he announced that he will be releasing a new full-length album tentatively titled Thulean Mysteries at some point in the near future. The release is intended to be used as background music while playing his MYFAROG tabletop role-playing game.

Amorphis is derived from the Greek 'amorphous' which means without determinate form, shapeless.

With Violent Solution's break-up, Jan Rechberger and Esa Holopainen formed Amorphis in 1990 with Jan on drums, Esa on lead guitars, Tomi Koivusaari as vocalist, and Olli-Pekka Laine as bassist. Soon after signing with Relapse Records (which would remain their label until 2001), Amorphis released its first two albums, The Karelian Isthmus and Tales From the Thousand Lakes. Beginning with the latter album, Amorphis' signature sound began to change from the death metal style that characterized its earlier history towards a cleaner, more melodic and progressive sound.

As the band moved away from its death metal roots, it underwent a series of line-up changes in 1995 and 1996. Kim Rantala briefly became the keyboardist, to be later replaced by Santeri Kallio in 1999. Jan was replaced as drummer by Pekka Kasari of Stone fame. The band also picked up Pasi Koskinen as vocalist. Pasi and Tomi Koivusaari would split clean and harsh vocal duties before Tomi eventually stopped singing altogether.

After the release of Am Universum in 2001 and with the release of Far From the Sun in 2003, the band underwent yet another series of line-up changes. Jan rejoined the band as Pekka left due to family obligations. Pasi left in 2004 to be replaced by Tomi Joutsen after a year long period of auditions for the role. With the release of Eclipse, Amorphis would also sign with its current label, Nuclear Blast.

Supporting the launch of Silent Waters in 2007, Amorphis undertook its first ever headlining tour in North America. As the band continued to expand its international presence at festivals and gigs, the band recorded and released Skyforger in 2009 and The Beginning of Times in 2011.

In 2002, the band was asked for a contribution to the soundtrack for the movie Menolippu Mombasaan. The commissioned piece was a cover version of a 1976 Finnish pop hit "Kuusamo", which was given the full Amorphis treatment and remains the band's only song in their native language to this day: Kuusamo (Danny cover) (05:57)

After about 13 years with a steady line-up, Niclas Etelävuori departed in April 2017, citing severe dissatisfaction with the band's management. His acidic post was published on the band's facebook page, who however stated they wish to continue with their current manager.

Amorphis' official biography was published in 2015, written by Markus Laakso. The book is currently only available in Finnish.

The band was billed as Wolf's Lair Abyss for a few secret gigs during the Wolf's Lair Abyss tour.

Founded by Jørn Stubberud (Necrobutcher), and Kjetil (Manheim) under the name Musta (Finnish for "black"), which they changed to Mayhem after Øystein Aarseth (Euronymous) joined in. The band name is taken from the Venom song, "Mayhem with Mercy".
During the early years, the band used either session vocalists Messiah or Maniac for live/studio commitments, and played either instrumentally, or with Necrobutcher or Euronymous on vocals during rehearsals.

By late 1987 both Manheim and Maniac had left the band, their positions were filled temporarily by members of Vomit, before vocalist Dead, and drummer Hellhammer took over in 1988.

Dead committed suicide in 1991 by shooting himself in the mouth with a shotgun after cutting his wrists with a knife. The shells were given to him by Varg Vikernes (Count Grishnackh), who knew that Dead used to practice with a shotgun in the forest close to the house where the members of Mayhem lived. His body, along with a suicide note saying "Excuse all the blood", was discovered in his room. Euronymous took some pictures (one of them appearing as the cover of the infamous "Dawn of the Black Hearts" bootleg album) of the suicide scene. A legend was born, and it was said that Euronymous had cooked and eaten pieces of Dead's brain. It was also said that fragments of Dead's skull had been collected and made into necklaces that both Euronymous and Hellhammer wore as a tribute to Dead. Of course it is doubtful that the truth was as macabre as people would like to believe regarding the cannibalism, but it is a confirmed fact that necklaces were made, and that pictures were taken.

With the media and police attention following Dead's suicide, Necrobutcher (Jørn Stubberud) decided to leave the band. Dead was replaced by Occultus (Stian Johansen), ex-singer of Thyabhorrent and partner of Euronymous in the "Helvete" shop. He sang and played bass in Mayhem for a few months, but soon left. With the band's need for musicians, Varg Vikernes (Burzum) joined as bassist and participated on the De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas album, along with Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar who performed on the album but never fully committed to the band at the time.

On August 10th, 1993, Varg Vikernes murdered Euronymous in his apartment with Snorre W. Ruch acting as an accomplice. Their relationship before the murder was tense, as their friendship and musical relationship started going downhill. Vikernes, who had started to play bass in Mayhem, killed him due to a number of alleged reasons: over a girl, jealousy of Euronymous's position in the Inner Circle, Euronymous owing him money, Euronymous not releasing Burzum's albums on time. Euronymous was found in his underwear, with stab wounds inflicted with a knife. Varg was rumoured to try and outdo the murder Faust of Emperor committed. At his trial, Vikernes came into court with his long hair made into pigtails, and denying his involvement in Euronymous's death. He giggled and laughed throughout the trial. He was convicted of the murder and was sentenced to 21 years in prison (the maximum possible sentence in Norway). When police arrested Vikernes, he was found with over 150 kilograms of stolen dynamite and alleged plans to destroy Nidarosdomen, a large Christian church in Trondheim, on a religious holiday. Although, Varg Vikernes has a different story to the reasons for killing Euronymous (see http://www.burzum.org for articles Varg composed himself explaining the murder).

After the trial, Euronymous's parents asked Hellhammer to remove the bass lines that Varg had recorded. He told them he would record new bass lines himself, but the truth is that he didn't know how to play the instrument, so the album remained the same, featuring Varg on it. Other rumours about Occultus playing the new bass lines are also false, he never played a note with the band during his time in Mayhem, according to Hellhammer.

Despite the death of the band's founder and main driving force, Hellhammer later reactivated the band, with Maniac and Necrobutcher rejoining alongside new guitarist Blasphemer. Mayhem's musical style changed drastically over the years that followed. In 2004, Maniac left again and Atilla Csihar rejoined Mayhem on a full-time basis.

Mayhem's live show, particularly in the days of Euronymous and Dead, has always been known for featuring heavy atmospheric effects such as severed pig heads impaled on wooden spikes. Dead's clothes were buried days/weeks before the show, and were exhumed decayed, soiled, and full of insects. Pieces of rotting meat were thrown into the audience. Dead ravens were placed in a bag so Dead could continually smell decay and death. Members were also noted to cut themselves onstage. While the more extreme aspects of the show has been toned down in later years, Attila Csihar remains infamous for his theatrical performances and stage costumes.

Interesting fact: Euronymous is responsible for getting many nowadays famous bands (Darkthrone, Immortal, Emperor) into black metal and/or influenced them to change their musical style from death metal to black metal. He's considered to be responsible for sparking the whole Norwegian black metal movement and making it what it is today.

Despite once playing in the strongly anti-Christian band Mayhem, early vocalist Kittil Kittilsen (ex-Kvikksølvguttene, Vomit) left the music scene around 2000 and became a fundamentalist Christian and warns people of the dangers of playing in a rock/pop band regardless of what the lyrics/ideology is about.

Formed in 1983 by Mike Browning, Trey Azagthoth, and Dallas Ward, Morbid Angel are known as one of the pioneering bands of the death metal genre and also the first death metal band to have significant commercial success, selling over a million albums throughout their career. This is due in part to them also being the first death metal band to get signed to a major record label, Giant Records, in association with Warner Brothers Records.

For some time Morbid Angel were an instrumental band until bass player Dallas began performing vocals.

This is a rehearsal bootleg with the following lineup:
Dallas Ward - Bass/Vocals
Kenny Bamber -Vocals
Trey Azagthoth - Guitars
Mike Browning - Drums

Several singers were auditioned and the bootleg rehearsal above, recorded in 1985, had local metal vocalist Kenny Bamber and Dallas sharing vocals. Kenny's style did not fit the band, so Dallas continued singing.

Richard Brunelle joined the line-up on guitar and also did some vocals at some live shows before Dallas left the band. After Dallas' departure, Mike Browning took over lead vocals and the classic Abominations of Desolation record was recorded in 1986.

The band has a tradition of releasing albums in alphabetical order beginning with the title's first letter. According to the group it was done purely by accidental coincidence when Blessed are the Sick was released and when they discovered it they kept the tradition going with Covenant and onward.

On August 12, 2004, David Vincent returned to the band. After leaving Morbid Angel, he began playing with the Genitorturers, which is a shock rock/goth punk band that features his wife Gen.

Morbid Angel left their long time label Earache because the sales for Heretic were poor compared to their other releases (highest number: Covenant of over 500,000. Lowest number: Heretic at lower than 20,000).

Erik Rutan returned to the band as a special guest for their European festival tour in 2006.

In an interview in December 2013, David Vincent confirmed that Pete Sandoval is no longer a member of the band.
