The information on the rehearsal tapes shown here differs a bit from the information that can be found in the official Death site, due to inconsistencies found in the latter.

One of the first death metal bands, originally founded in 1983 as Mantas, changed their name to Death in late 1984.

Death disbanded due to Chuck Schuldiner dying of a high-grade pontine glioma (a malignant type of brain cancer that invades the brainstem) on December 13th, 2001. The cause of death was that he took the drug vincristine to help combat the cancer and his condition worsened as he became ill with pneumonia. However, Chuck put Death on hold already in late 1998 after The Sounds of Perseverance tour in order to focus on his other project Control Denied.

Clearly, this band is not to be confused with Death, the African American garage rock/proto-punk band from Detroit, Michigan.

Throughout their career, Death went through constant line-up changes; however, the long enduring name was and still is regarded as a moniker of mastermind Chuck Schuldiner, who was the only member to appear on all recordings, except for one demo, which Kam Lee released, under the name Death, after Chuck's move to San Francisco in 1985. The demo is better considered Massacre material.

Death had some dramatic changes in their sound; in the beginning, before even releasing a demo and under the name Mantas, the band wanted to play Venom/Celtic Frost influenced metal, but upon hearing bands like Possessed, Mantas wanted to play and expand death metal. Thus, they decided to change their name to Death to sum up what their music and lyrics were about. So Death started off as death metal with gore related lyrics, as heard on Scream Bloody Gore. Starting with Human, the band underwent a noticeable transformation, with lyrics not relating to gore but more to the human mind; starting Individual Thought Patterns, the band had brought in progressive elements: thus the last studio album, The Sound of Perseverance, has a sound significantly different from that of the traditional death metal the band originally helped to define.

A tribute album is in the works for Death and Chuck courtesy of ex-guitarist James Murphy and will have appearances by members of: Obituary, Six Feet Under, Iced Earth, Shadows Fall, Testament among many other big names in metal.

Beginning in 2012, former members of the band and others have toured as cover/tribute band under the names Death to All, Death DTA, and Death DTA Tours. These acts have the support of the Schuldiner family's Perseverance Holdings Ltd., which manages Chuck's legacy.

Carcass is considered to be the major inspiration and musical foundation for most deathgrind/goregrind bands, as well as being one of the founding fathers of melodic death metal when they had switched their genre to the melodic death metal sound by the early '90s.

Carcass started as a goregrind band which they carried out on their demo tapes, and first two albums, then moved to a death metal sound which evolved into their melodic death and heavy metal roots before their split. Their Heartwork album, released in 1993, is one of the first melodic death metal albums ever released.

Bill Steer moved into the stoner rock band Firebird (not to be confused with the 1978 NWOBHM band Firebird), Mike focused on his retro band Spiritual Beggars before forming a side-project with his brother Chris called Arch Enemy which went on to become very successful. Jeff, Ken and Carlo formed the short-lived Blackstar after the demise of Carcass.

At the age of 28, Ken Owen had a brain hemorrhage and was in a coma for almost a year. He was confined to a wheelchair for a time, but has since partially recovered and despite heavily confined movement has began playing drums again.

Carcass reunited in 2007 for touring purposes. Despite Ken Owen starting to play drums again, he is still unable to perform to the level required for Carcass. Daniel Erlandsson of Arch Enemy replaced him for touring purposes. Despite this, Owen has been involved in the reunited band's activities and makes brief appearances at selected live shows.

Amott and Erlandsson both left Carcass in 2012 when the reunion became a full-time one in order to avoid scheduling conflicts with Arch Enemy.

A UK edition of Bjork's Isobel single has a version of the song "remixed" by Carcass (in fact, it was just the vocals to the original song mixed over an entirely new piece of music).

Jeff Walker appears on the release The Final Remixes by Die Krupps with a cover version of their track Inside Out.

The track 'Captive Bolt Pistol' from Surgical Steel was featured in a 2014 episode of the American CBS television show Elementary.

Originally formed in 1984, under the name Executioner. Since there was already a band called Executioner in Boston, they changed it to Xecutioner and then finally to Obituary in 1988, after they signed with Roadrunner Records.

Obituary are considered to be one of the pioneering bands of the death metal genre. They started playing music in the vein of Venom and Celtic Frost. Once the band started hearing groups like Possessed, they realized that they want to make music as "sick as these guys."

Their "The End Complete" album is crowned the best selling pure death metal album ever released, selling over 100,000 copies in the US, and over a quarter million worldwide. Also, the new Obituary logo (as can be seen on "The End Complete") has been considered Roadrunner's best selling shirt print in its history.

Obituary had a six year absence between 1997-2003, because the band members had other priorities to turn to like raising new families and getting "real jobs". The reunion is credited to Donald Tardy's time playing in Andrew W.K.'s band, when, during one live performance in Florida, some of the other Obituary members were present and decided to play some Obituary tunes just for fun for the audience, eventually leading to a full-time reunion.

Trevor Peres and John Tardy have collaborated with the Brooklyn-based rapper Necro on his album "The Prefix For Death". The band members know Necro through his days as a bass player for death metal band Injustice.

John Tardy said in a interview that initially there was no message in Obituary's lyrics, just some random words and statements about death and the rest is just growling. He started writing "proper" lyrics from "The End Complete" onwards, "mostly fictional kind of stuff, not meant to be taken seriously".

Allen West was sent to prison in 2007. John Tardy later revealed in an interview that West had been jailed for repeated drink driving offenses. Ralph Santolla, shortly after departing Deicide, replaced him for "Xecutioner's Return". West was arrested again in 2013 after the police discovered a meth lab in his home. In a 2014 interview, John and Donald Tardy said they have lost contact with West, since he was released from prison.

For the 2010 South American tour, Obituary's long time friend and Floridian death metal stalwart Terry Butler (Death, Massacre, Six Feet Under, Denial Fiend, Obliterhate) took on bass duties in place of Frank Watkins. Terry Butler permanently replaced Watkins some time later.

The band name comes from a Portuguese translation of Motörhead's song "Dancing on Your Grave" which is "Dançando na sua Sepultura". Sepultura means "grave" (sepulchre) in Portuguese (and in some other Latin-based languages). Originally, they wanted to call the band Tropa de Choque (Shock Troops), but found that the name had been used before.

The first Sepultura show was on December 4th, 1984. The band played two songs that never were re-recorded or released.

Line-up of the first show:

Wagner "Antichrist" - Vocals
Max "Possessed" - Guitars
Igor "Skullcrusher" - Drums

A VHS tape called Live Reviews was released by Roadrunner in 1992/93.

Other Official Releases:

Sepultura played the Donington Monsters of Rock Festival in England in 1996 as a three-piece with Andreas Kisser on lead vocals after Max Cavalera learned about the murder of his stepson Dana Wells.

Max left Sepultura in December 1996 after the rest of the band had clashes with his wife (Dana Wells' mother) and band manager Gloria Bujnowski. He went on to form the alternative/nu-metal band Soulfly.

Derrick Green, originally from Cleveland, Ohio relocated to Brazil to replace Max as vocalist. Sepultura have largely played as a single guitar band since then, though Green has occasionally played rhythm onstage.

Roy Mayorga filled-in for Igor Cavalera during the European tour with In Flames in 2006. Igor quit Sepultura permanently later the same year. The Cavalera brothers then reunited in the Cavalera Conspiracy project.

Not to be confused with the power metal band Sodom from Munich.

During their formative years, the band called their music "Witching Metal".

Sodom was formed by Tom Angelripper and Aggressor in 1982 in the western German industrial town of Gelsenkirchen. They were mostly influenced by bands like Motörhead, Tank, Raven, and Venom.

They soon found a drummer called Bloody Monster who was quickly replaced by Chris Witchhunter, with whom they released two demos, 1982/83's Witching Metal & 1984's Victims of Death, before signing a deal with SPV GmbH. After a 1984 gig in Frankfurt (with Destruction & Tankard), Manfred Schütz of SPV GmbH approached the band & spoke the legendary sentence "You guys are so bad, you will sell a lot of records!" This led to the recording of their debut EP In the Sign of Evil. Missing was Aggressor, who'd left the band. He was replaced by Grave Violator (recommended to the band by Kreator's Mille Petrozza), who also wouldn't stay very long. A full album's worth of material was intended to be recorded for In the Sign of Evil, but problems with the label caused the release to be truncated to an EP.

In Grave Violator's place, Michael Wulf joined, just to leave the band shortly after the recordings of what would be their first full-length album, 1986's Obsessed by Cruelty, to join Kreator (where he would last only one show). He later died in 1993 in a motorcycle accident. Obsessed by Cruelty was entirely re-recorded (also in 1986) with another short-time guitarist at the stipulation of the record company, though confusingly both versions ended up being released. The new recording (featuring additional song "After the Deluge") was used by Steamhammer for the European release, but for the American release through Metal Blade, the original rejected recording was accidentally used instead. Over the years, mislabeled reissues of the album have only served to further muddy the waters, with the original recording ending up being the more widely heard version.

After Obsessed by Cruelty was released, the band abolished their Satanic image and replaced it with the (pacifistic-motivated) war theme that can be found on most of Sodom's records. With their new guitarist Frank Blackfire, the most legendary Sodom line-up recorded two albums (plus a live album, Mortal Way of Live, the first of various Sodom releases which had a censored cover in Germany): Persecution Mania (which was the first Sodom album produced by the band's long-time producer Harris Johns and also was the first cover to feature the band's mascot "Knarrenheinz") and Agent Orange (including the single "Ausgebombt"). This album made Sodom the first German thrash band to enter the charts, reaching #36 on the German Media Control charts.

Blackfire left in 1989 (like Destructor before, he joined Kreator) and was replaced by ex-Assassin guitarist Michael "Micha" Hoffmann.

In 1992, Tom fired Chris Witchhunter after increasing bouts with substance abuse. Atomic Steif, who would stay in the band until 1996 (and, like many former Sodom members, was still embittered that Tom fired him), became the new drummer.

From 1997 to 2010, Sodom had a consistent line-up of Tom Angelripper, Konrad "Bobby" Schottkowski, and Bernemann. In 2001, Tom was awarded double platinum for more than a million Sodom albums sold, which may or may not include the various solo albums he released as Onkel Tom Angelripper.

In 2007, Tom re-assembled the In the Sign of Evil membership (Witchhunter and Grave Violator) to re-record the original EP and other songs from the same era and release it as the full-length album it was originally intended to be under the name The Final Sign of Evil.

Sodom collaborated with famous German schlager singer/actor Roberto Blanco in 2011, making a commercial intended to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease. He also joined them on stage at various gigs (including Wacken 2011) for a metal rendition of his song "Ein bisschen Spaß muss sein".

The band was called Tormentor in the old days (1982-1984). Both demos were released under that name. The first line-up was Mille, Rob, and Ventor. A few guitarists were tried before Tritze joined after the Flag of Hate EP. Michael Wulf was in the band for a few days and didn't play on Pleasure to Kill, despite his getting credit.

With Tritze the band started their first tour ever (before the release of Pleasure to Kill they had only played five gigs total). In 1989, German director Thomas Schadt made a documentary about Kreator (focusing on the social aspect of heavy metal in the Ruhr area) titled Thrash Altenessen (named after the band's hometown, a suburb of Essen).

Tritze left Kreator after Extreme Aggression, which was (as was the follow-up Coma of Souls) recorded in Los Angeles with producer Randy Burns (Also Megadeth, among others). Tritze was replaced by a former Sodom guitarist, Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik, who would stay in the band until 1996.

After the release of Renewal in '92, founding member Rob decided to leave the band to spend more time with his family. He was replaced by Andreas Herz, who never played on any official releases as the band released nothing between 1992 and 1995. The reason was a long fight between the band and their label, Noise Records, because Kreator wanted to get out of their contract. This also contributed to Ventor's decision to leave Kreator, together with personal problems he had at the time.

When they finally signed a new deal with GUN Records in 1995, Herz had already been replaced by Christian Giesler. Also, the band had a new drummer in Joe Cangelosi, who was a friend of Frank Blackfire. Cangelosi decided to leave after only one album, and Gosdzik also departed at this time. Ventor returned to the band to replace him and Frank Gosdzik was replaced with Tommy Vetterli (Coroner). When he left in 2001, Sami Yli-Sirniö was brought in.

Despite the fact that he appears in the album credits, Johnny Ðordevic didn't sing on Clandestine or Stranger Aeons. The vocals were actually recorded by Nicke Andersson and Ulf "Uffe" Cederlund, just as he didn't record bass on Carnage's Dark Recollections. He only performed with them live.

After Alex Hellid didn't participate on an Entombed tour in 2013, it was announced that he'd be performing Clandestine with Ulf "Uffe" Cederlund and Nicke Andersson along with Gävle Symphony Orchestra. Meanwhile L-G Petrov recorded an album which was intended to be released in the fall of 2013. However, it was delayed apparently because of a name dispute.

In January 2014 it was announced that Back to the Front would be released under the moniker Entombed A.D. and that Petrov wouldn't perform with Entombed. Nicke Andersson isn't mentioned in the Clandestine concert information, either.

According to an interview in Sweden Rock Magazine #3 / 2014 with L-G and Nico, the name Entombed is now owned by all four original members: Alex Hellid, L-G Petrov, Uffe Cederlund and Nicke Andersson and is not to be used until further notice. On May 17th, 2017, the Swedish Court of First Instance (Patent and Market Court (PMD) at Stockholm District Court) ruled on the trademark in favor of Hellid, Andersson, and Cederlund.

Nicke, Uffe and Alex are reuniting and playing a gig without LG on the Close Up-Båten in October 2016.

Cannibal Corpse are considered an important name in the death metal genre as well as one of the style's most commercially-successful bands.

Alex Webster came up with the name for the band, describing a Cannibal Corpse as "an undead corpse that's going to eat you" in the Centuries of Torment: The First 20 Years DVD.

Chris Barnes was the vocalist, lyricist & a large overall part of the band's creative force throughout their first four albums. He was asked to leave the band for the reasons of increasingly poor vocal performances as well as attitude issues. This is despite rumors saying it was for spending too much time on his side-band Six Feet Under.

A common rumor regarding the original logo is that Chris Barnes, the first to illustrate it, claims rights to its use & following his departure a new logo had to be designed. This is why newer reissues of albums featuring Chris Barnes often display the newer logo.

In Germany, due to various complaints made by teachers & parents claiming Cannibal Corpse to be a danger to children, the band wasn't allowed to play songs appearing on the first three albums in live settings. That ended in June 2006, however, for it was the roundabout date for the ban to be officially lifted. Nevertheless, several releases are still indexed/banned by the German Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons & includes Eaten Back to Life, Tomb of the Mutilated, Hammer Smashed Face & Worm Infested, all of which are considered harmful to minors & bars their purchase of them. Butchered at Birth, Created to Kill & Evisceration Plague are prohibited & may not be sold at all.

The band make a cameo appearance in the 1994 comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. They appear in the scene where Ace goes to meet Woodstock & on stage playing their song "Hammer Smashed Face" is Cannibal Corpse. They're shown again in an extended scene where Ace, now shirtless & running from security, leaps onstage & performs a few vocal lines before crowd-surfing out of the venue. However, due to the song's explicit lyrics, television captions merely show Barnes "grr-ing!" repeatedly. The band is also incorrectly listed in the credits as the "thrasher band" Cannibal Corpses. Naturally, the entire scene has been removed from German versions of the movie.

Split up in 2006, although the announcement was never officially made. They reunited with Ricky Myers contacting Diego Sanchez about the reformation. Various current and past members play Disgorge songs under the name To Violenty Vomit when Ricky Myers is unavailable.

A fan made music video for the song "Consume the Forsaken" was featured in the background of the movie Paranormal Activity without the band's knowledge, leading to a lengthy legal dispute.

All three members Moyses, Max, and Alex are brothers. Alex uses his father's surname, Camargo, whereas his brothers use their mother's surname, Kolesne. On the EP Unmerciful Order, all three brothers are credited with the surname Kolesne.

The band was a four-piece for a very short period of time before deciding that they worked better as a three-piece after Mauricio Nogueira left, forming the trio which has stayed constant to this day.

The band's name Krisiun is based upon the "Mare Crisiun" (sea of crises), a moon crater. It plays a major role in Arthur C. Clarke's sci-fi novel The Sentinel, which was later partly adapted to become the well-known movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The band was originally called Amon, and recorded two demos under this name, which were later released on CD as Amon: Feasting the Beast. They changed the name to Deicide in late 1989, just prior to the recording of the self-titled debut. This was done at the insistence of their then-label, Roadrunner Records, because there was a song called "'Amon' Belongs to 'Them'" on the King Diamond album, Conspiracy.

Deicide:

De"i*cide, n. [L. deicida a deicide (in sense 2); deus god + c[ae]dere to cut, kill: cf. F. d['e]icide.]

1. The act of killing a being of a divine nature; particularly, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. [R.]
Earth profaned, yet blessed, with deicide. --Prior.

2. One concerned in putting Christ to death.

In the early days of the band and apparently to show how much he despises Christianity, Glen Benton branded an inverted cross into his forehead using nothing but a flaming coat hanger. After seven times embedding a red hot inverted cross into his skin, it has scarred into its shape.

On November 25th, 2004, Glen Benton officially stated that the Hoffman brothers would no longer be in the band due to them cancelling and walking off many shows, among other personal issues. The main reason the brothers left was actually a change in the percentages of royalties between the band. Previously, there had been an even four-way split. Under the new agreement, the Hoffmans were entitled to a far smaller share of the profits (with as much as 50% going to Benton). The Hoffmans have since started a new band, using Deicide's original name Amon.

Jack Owen, recently out of Cannibal Corpse and Dave Suzuki, who had worked with Benton in Vital Remains came in to help Deicide on tour. Owen stayed on, but Suzuki's place was taken by Ralph Santolla for the recording of The Stench of Redemption. Glen Benton missed the entire European tour for this album because he had to attend a court case to do with matrimonial/custody matters; the tour carried on anyway with help from some eleventh hour replacements. Seth Van De Loo (who was playing drums for the support band, Severe Torture) performed vocals on the first four dates of the tour due to the last-minute nature of Benton's decision not to travel. They played these gigs with no bass player. Garbathy "Yaha" of Dissenter was then brought in as replacement bassist/vocalist for the remaining dates. Jack Owen also performed lead vocals on some songs at these shows. This obviously controversial tour followed on from two European tours which were cancelled at the last minute in the 1990s.

Ralph Santolla officially left Deicide in 2007, but performed on Till Death Do Us Part as a session musician. Steve Asheim also contributed to the guitar playing on this album for the first time. Kevin Quirion, who plays with Steve Asheim in Council of the Fallen/Order of Ennead, joined Deicide in 2008 as a touring replacement for Santolla. Santolla briefly returned in 2009, but soon left again and Quirion joined as a permanent member in July that year.

In 1992, while Gorefest were opening for Deicide in Stockholm, a bomb exploded outside the emergency door behind their stage (which was on the fifth floor of the building), causing extensive structural damage to the door and the wall. Some people thought that Gorefest, a politically correct band, was attacked by people involved in the black metal scene, but in reality the bomb was planted by the Animal Militia, a UK-based pro-animals group, aimed at Deicide playing later that evening. Glen Benton had received earlier death threats over his stance on mutilating small animals and afterward received another letter saying that "Stockholm was just a taste of what is to come".

Glen Benton has also done backing vocals for the following bands:

- On the song "Hung, Drawn and Quartered" by Cancer on the album Death Shall Rise
- For Napalm Death on the song "Unfit Earth" on their breakthrough album Harmony Corruption
- And for Cannibal Corpse on the songs "Mangled" and "A Skull Full of Maggots" from the album Eaten Back to Life and on "Vomit the Soul" from the album Butchered at Birth.

In 2007, Steve Asheim was arrested and held for police questioning in Austria after presenting money to a bank teller that was covered in red ink. The police believed him to be involved in a recent bank robbery, so he was taken in. After hours of questioning, it was discovered that a red pen had leaked in his pocket, staining the money. Asheim was released without further questioning.

Compilation appearances:

- "Dead by Dawn" on At Death's Door (Roadrunner / R/C, 1990).
- "Dead But Dreaming" on Headbangers Club - Heavy Metal Hits (Roadrunner, 1992).
- "Repent to Die" on Roadrunner Records Presents Songs of Pain (Roadrunner, 1992).
- "Inside My Head (Feat. Rob Barret)" on F.T.W. If It Can't Take A Joke: A Tribute to the Dayglo Abortions (Thought Crimes MFG, 2019).
