Até agora, foram poucos os jogos de estratégia em tempo real (RTS, na sigla em inglês) a terem como tema a conquista espacial. O motivo é a grande escala dos combates, que complicaria a administração, já que o jogador teria que dar atenção a um grande número de unidades espalhadas por mapas enormes enquanto o tempo corre continuamente.
No entanto, "Sins of the Solar Empire" abraçou o desafio, e pode se tornar modelo para uma nova era dos games de estratégia em tempo real. O trunfo é a maleabilidade da escala: na menor, o jogo tem apenas três planetas, e a partida pode ser encerrada em menos de uma hora; por outro lado, também podem existir vários sistemas solares, cada um com uma dúzia de planetas, e, nesse caso, os conflitos podem demandar meses para atingir seu fim.
No game, o usuário controla uma de três diferentes facções e as partidas podem ter até dez jogadores. No começo, cada um tem apenas um planeta e o objetivo é conquistar mais territórios. Para isso, deve-se minerar matérias-primas como metais e cristais a partir dos asteróides, e construir uma frota.
Uma das características do game é a simplicidade. Para obter os materiais, o jogador pode indicar uma unidade mineradora, como na maioria dos RTS, ou simplesmente apontar para um asteróide e dar o comando. Assim, o sistema procura a nave mais próxima para fazer o serviço de coleta de matéria-prima. Controlar uma esquadra também é simples, pois o grupo inteiro funciona como se fosse uma única unidade. Obviamente, os jogadores que quiserem comandar individualmente cada nave da frota têm a liberdade de fazer essa microadministração.
Grande parte das movimentações estratégicas acontece usando ícones que ficam do lado esquerdo da tela, que mostra os planetas e inimigos conhecidos. Dali é possível acessar dados mais completos, e, assim, planejar e executar suas ações. A viagem entre planetas é feita por hiper-espaço, mas existem caminhos a serem seguidos e o processo de "warp" demanda tempo para acontecer. O propósito é proporcionar viagens rápidas, mas que não sejam usadas para escapar facilmente dos oponentes ou atacar diretamente seu o planeta principal.
Em Sins of a Solar Empire, a Stardock traz uma ótima experiência para os fãs dos jogos de estratégia em tempo real, gerenciamento de recursos, combate espacial, simuladores de comércio e diplomacia. Highlights:
-Random fluctuations in addition to user influence on price.
-Can cause crash or boom by selling/buying too much.
-Known exploits removed.
-Can now buy and sell resources on the market in large increments again.
-Improved Group Phase Jumping for large groups of ships. The group will only wait for 90% of the value of the ships to be ready. The stragglers will follow shortly after. Typically, its only a couple ships that cause the whole operation to stall so this should eliminate the majority of problems.
-Research subjects queued in different fields can now upgrade in parallel.
-Overseer's Nanite Reactive Armor ability can now properly stack heals (but not the armor and max HP bonus).
-Kostura Cannon now only disables enemy units and structures at the target planet as originally intended.
-Autocast for many disabling abilities improved.
-Disciple's Transfer Antimatter no longer targets other Disciples when autocasting.
-Transfer Antimatter can no longer target entities with full antimatter.
-Can't attack unbuilt structures anymore.
-You can now change game options when loading save games.
-Defeated players can no longer give or be given resources in unlocked teams games.
-Defeated players can no longer place bounties in unlocked teams games.
-Fixed unintended halving of galaxy culture coverage in the game statistics. Pop Idol achievement is now actually achievable.
-No pirate maps removed due to new game option to remove pirates.
